Amber sighed. Bernd, her boyfriend, was a miserable mess today and she was at a loss for how to deal with it. Part of her wanted to throw up her hands and walk away, but another part was worried about him and the consequences if she did. “Bernd honey, I think you need some help. Someone you could talk to,” she said softly.
He looked up at her and she could see he was trying hard not to cry. He opened his mouth a few times as if to say something, but nothing came out. Bernd rubbed under his eyes, willing the tears to stop, but they would not listen and a few coursed down his cheeks.
“Bernd,” Amber said, trying a new tack, “if you want to get married, you need to get yourself straightened out first. How can you take care of me, if you can’t take care of yourself?”
He wiped his tears away. Bernd nodded. He was still slumped over and, hurting from what, Amber had no idea. She put her arms around him and held him close. Instead of joining him in his misery, she forced herself to be strong for him, even though it was scary.
“Talking will help me feel better…?” he said softly.
“Yeah… And we can go together too, for couple’s counseling, so I’ll have a better idea on how to help you too,” she said just as softly.
“Thanks…” Bernd said. For the first time in a long time, he felt as though some of the darkness was lifting. Shifting in her arms, he clung to her as he rode out a wave of misery that threatened to drown him in tears.
